Recording School Toronto
It took me a long time to find the right Recording School to learn about sound engineering and the recording arts. Although there are many places to do so, very few are worth the time and money. Number 9 Recording School, however, far surpassed my expectations for a quality choice. I was lucky enough to have heard of it when I was deciding where to go. I took the Certified Complete Recording Course where I learned everything I needed to, one-on-one, with a pro engineer.
Being in an actual recording studio, rather than a classroom environment was the major factor in my decision to go to Number 9. Since I was the only student I was able to move at my own pace and get a direct and in depth explanation of all the course material. The classes worked around my schedule, so I never felt rushed or left behind. It was also very comfortable learning environment. The staff is great, the gear is amazing and you will have everything at your disposal.
It was nice to see how a studio operated from the inside. It allowed me to understand what it takes to be able to work in one. I was lucky enough to be able to assist on various recording sessions with clients recording at the studio. This gave me great insight to the entirety of the recording process.
Probably the best part of taking the course at Number 9 recording school was that when it’s finished you already have your foot in the door. You will have already had the ‘in studio’ work experience, from assisting, that you need to move forward in the right direction. Also, unlike many of the alternatives, Number 9 is very affordable and definitely worth it!

The Number 9 Audio Group Recording Course was exactly what I was looking for.I had started writing songs and wanted to record them however I knew nothing about recording technology or techniques. I checked around Toronto and found some one-year recording courses which were quite expensive.I attended an orientation session offered by one well know school and learned that I would be one of about 30 people in a class. In addition, I was much older than the other potential students and I did not get a comfortable feeling that I would be welcomed as a peer.I searched a little more, found the Number 9 recording school on the web and was pleasantly surprised that it offered one-on-one instruction with continual hands on training. The course was also cheaper than the other ones I had investigated. After visiting the studio and meeting with the staff I signed up for the course. Resident recording engineer Bernie patiently taught me the how to’s and why do’s of recording. At the end of the course I was able to take a band into the studio, set it up, record a number of songs and then mix the results, all on my own.I am now putting what I learned from Number 9 recording school to good use in my steadily growing home studio.

One of the reasons I selected Number recording school was the great people and the relaxed, but professional atmosphere.Throughout the course these qualities were obvious and I noted the very positive comments from various artists recording at Number 9. I was also impressed with the flexibility that you, Neale, and Bernie demonstrated that allowed me to fit my course time into my busy work schedule. The recording course materials were very comprehensive and the tests helped reinforce my education and show me where to improve my knowledge and skills.Thank you also for inviting me to the your yearly Christmas parties – it was a pleasure to meet and talk with your clients and staff in a festive atmosphere. Bernie Cisternas was really great to work with. Beyond his obvious skills and experience, Bernie has an excellent way of making students and artists feel comfortable allowing them to make the most of their time at Number 9 and truly enjoy the experience. His knowledge of different genres of music and his command of the equipment and facilities at Number 9 helped make the recording course very comprehensive, covering all aspects of recording, editing, mixing and mastering music and other recorded material. In addition to teaching the fundamentals, Bernie helped convey the many intangibles that go into making great recordings. I learned new aspects of recording at every session.

I was enrolled in a post-secondary institution for sound and music production, but I decided to switch to the recording courses offered at Number 9 instead – I figured that one-on-one instruction with Number 9’s Head Engineer could not be beat. I learned the essentials of the recording process: correct microphone use, complex signal path scenarios, tracking, and optimal use of signal processors (EQ, compression, gating, etc.) to obtain the best sound possible. I also learned the audio editing process: Pro Tools, inside and out, and tips and tricks for improving overall sound quality. Every class presented various puzzles, the solution for which required me to learning something new about studio engineering. I feel very comfortable with the Number 9 studio setup, and I am confident that I can integrate my skills into other studios down the line. When I hear music, I am able to analyze more or less how it was made, and perhaps take some of the steps to reproduce it!
In addition to the educational component, being a student presents opportunities to assist with professional recording sessions. I’ve now had a number of opportunities to assist sessions, and each time I participate I feel more comfortable with meeting the needs of clients. At Number 9 recording school, there is a strong emphasis on expediency of performance, preparing students for the industry. Clients have certain expectations from their engineers, and Number 9 makes sure their students will meet them.

I chose the Number 9 recording course because as an international student coming from Europe, I recognized it as the best option offered in Toronto. Having previously earned a Bachelor’s degree in education and having worked as a teacher in Switzerland, I had high expectations of the methods to be used and the knowledge I’d gain during lessons. Not only are all of Number 9’s lessons given individually with access to state of the art recording equipment, but a personalized approach to the curriculum in addition to Bernie’s generous sharing of his exceptional sound engineering skills make this particular course stand out among many others offered in the region. So, that being said, I highly recommend to any person with serious aspirations towards sound engineering to take this course.
